Dental Implants

Implants give you options when replacing missing teeth. Dentures and dental implants are the two most common solutions.   The biggest difference is in long-term comfort and confidence.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants are more permanent than dentures.  Instead of temporarily anchoring to other teeth in the mouth, implants anchor permanently into bone just like the root of a tooth.  (See image.)   Then, a life-like crown is attached to the firmly-anchored implant.

Because of the permanence of these implants, they are more comfortable in your mouth.  They are natural looking and provide optimum comfort, feeling just like normal teeth.  What’s more, implants allow for the same biting force as normal teeth.  Dental implants can last a lifetime.

Dental implants require a larger, up-front investment.  The process for generating and inserting them takes longer than dentures.  This is generally made up for via the long-term value of dentures in terms of longevity, comfort and strength.

Dentures

You know about dentures.  They are generally removable, allowing  the wearer to take them in and out at leisure. Dentures anchor to existing teeth via a metal clasp.  As such, they can be very damaging to the teeth.  They can become loose fitting over time, requiring the use of dental adhesive to keep them in place.  Dentures can also be hard on the gum tissue when chewing and talking.

Dentures are easy to create.  Because of this, they are also relatively inexpensive.  However, over time, it is common to have numerous new sets made due to older sets getting lost or broker, or to adjust to the mouth as it ages.
