The Importance of Baby Teeth
Baby teeth are just as important as adult teeth. Baby teeth, also known as primary teeth, aid in chewing, speaking, and appearance, as well hold space in the jaws for the adult teeth. A baby’s first teeth begin to appear as early as six months after birth. When teething, some babies may have sore or tender gums. Gently massaging or rubbing your child’s gums with a clean finger, a small, cold spoon or a wet gauze pad can be soothing.
Most children will have a full set of 20 baby teeth within the first three years of life. By the age of five or six, the roots of the baby teeth begin to be absorbed by the tissues around them, and the adult teeth begin to erupt. Primary teeth and permanent teeth help give the face its shape and form. It is important to maintain healthy habits with your child to prevent tooth decay in primary teeth. Here are a few helpful tips recommended by the American Dental Association:
Begin cleaning the baby’s mouth during the first few days after birth. After feedings, plaque can be left behind that can harm erupting teeth. Wipe the gums with a clean gauze pad or wet washcloth.
Brush your child’s teeth with a child’s size toothbrush and water. When they reach two years of age, use a small pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Encourage your child to spit it out to avoid swallowing.
Help your child start good eating habits. Try to avoid snacks between meals that include candy, cookies, or other sweet, sticky foods. Try giving your child a balanced diet that includes the five major food groups.
Schedule your child’s first dental visit. With the first two years of age typically is a good time for their first visit. We recommend a “happy visit” to introduce your child to the dentist, give them a ride in the dental chair, and count their teeth with them.
If you have any questions about your child’s dental health, please call our office. We encourage you to take an active role in your child’s oral health. For more information, visit www.ada.org

Tobacco and Oral Health
If you’re thinking about quitting smoking or using tobacco products, now is a good time. Nicotine, the agent used in tobacco products, causes addiction and dependence. Quitting is hard to do, but the benefits will ensure a lower risk of heart attack, stroke or cancer, including oral cancer. So how do tobacco products affect your oral health? Here are some interesting facts:
- Tobacco products contain a variety of toxins associated with cancer.
- There are a minimum of 28 cancer causing chemicals in tobacco products.
- Smokeless tobacco can cause cancers of the mouth, lip, tongue, and pancreas.
- Swallowing the toxins in the juice of tobacco can increase the risk of cancer in the voice box, esophagus, colon, and bladder.
- Smokeless tobacco can irritate gum tissues which can lead to periodontal disease.
- Flavored smokeless tobacco usually contains sugar, which causes tooth decay
The American Dental Association recommends seeking medical advice if you experience any of the following signs or symptoms:
•any sign of irritation, like tenderness, burning or a sore that will not heal
•pain, tenderness or numbness anywhere in the mouth or lips
•development of a lump, or a leathery, wrinkled or bumpy patch inside your mouth; color changes to your oral soft tissues (gray, red or white spots or patches), rather than a healthy pink color;
•difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking or moving the jaw or tongue;
•any change in the way your teeth fit together.
At Chalet Dental Care your health is important to us. Please feel free to call or schedule a visit if you have any questions about your oral health. To learn more visit www.ada.org.
Diabetes and Your Oral Health
If you or a loved one suffers from diabetes you know there are complications associated with diabetes, such as heart disease, stroke and kidney disease. Emerging research is showing that all Americans who have diabetes are also at an increased risk for gum disease. There are two ways diabetes can have an impact on your health. If you are diabetic you are more susceptible to serious gum disease and serious gum disease may affect blood glucose control and contribute to the progression of health problems. Gum disease, also known as periodontitis, is when your gums begin to pull away from your teeth and pockets begin to from between your teeth and gums. The pockets fill with germs and pus and overtime begin to deepen. Periodontal scaling or surgery is needed and if no action is taken the bone that surrounds your teeth will be lost and your teeth may start to move or get loose. Some other common problems associated with diabetes include thrush and dry mouth.
If you have diabetes it is important to control your blood glucose level. You should visit your dentist regularly to maintain good oral health. When you visit your hygienist or dentist, review your medical history and talk with your doctor about your health. At Chalet Dental Care your oral health is important to us. We encourage our patients to take an active role in your oral health.
